Limits

Watertightness is not guaranteed by the file extension

A scan of a visible surface may not include the back, underside or occluded areas needed for a closed object. Filling those gaps means making assumptions. Feasibility, repair scope and intended tolerances must be reviewed for each project.

Can E57 be converted directly to STL?

Not usually. E57 normally stores point samples while STL stores triangle geometry, so cleanup and a surface-reconstruction step are generally required.

Will STL preserve scan colors?

STL is primarily a geometry format and is not a dependable choice for color or textures. OBJ or a web-ready format may be more appropriate when appearance matters.

Will the mesh be watertight?

That depends on scan coverage and the intended use. Occluded or unscanned regions cannot be reconstructed faithfully without assumptions, so watertightness must be reviewed per project.

Can large E57 files be converted?

Large scans may be possible but often require filtering, simplification and manual review. Submit the project details for a feasibility assessment.
